Inspired on a trip many moons ago to Manchester to see the Lowry exhibition, I wanted to paint the moon myself. This kind of touches on relief work, as did most of my art and progression worksheets at college. Probably part of the reason that I was sent to specialise in sculpture.

In this painting, St Ives is only the stage; the true performer is that great silver sentinel, swelling into a super moon as if leaning closer to take a better look.

She…the moon….is never the same twice. We look up and swear she has changed, though perhaps it is we who shift, we who arrive each night with different eyes. She hangs there — constant, patient — yet she slips away when she chooses, a magician of light and absence. We have chased her with rockets, mapped her dust, written libraries in her name, and still she keeps her quiet mysteries tucked beneath her glow.

In this painting, she feels almost tender yet a guardian on the night shift, reminding us with her brightness that we are watched over. That even in darkness, something steady and celestial keeps vigil. And for a moment…just a moment, we realise we are only small and we only play a small part on her stage.
